It is difficult to understand what a depression really is, but I will try to explain it to you :
Imagine you are surrounded by water and you’re trying not to drown. Then slowly but surely, your head goes underwater, and you start drowning. Now you’re descending deeper and deeper into the water. As you fall deeper, everything gets darker, your senses become numb and all you can think about, is that you are suffocating. You try everything to swim back to the surface, but no matter how hard you try, it is in vain and you’re being dragged into this bottomless sea.
What I want you to try to understand is, that depression puts you in a mental state of sadness. This is not temporary – it stays with you the whole time. And that is why, even activities which you previously enjoyed doing (playing football or hanging out with your friends) now seem meaningless and you can’t appreciate them anymore. Eventually, depression affects your way of thinking, it affects the way you are and the choices you make.
Unfortunately, there is no simple cure for depression, it’s even quite complicated to narrow down why you might fall into one, but help exists. And the first step for remission, is to accept that you can and should ask for help.
If you think you or someone close to you has a depression, you can always talk to your doctor about it. Talking to your friends about it may help, but professional help is important. But do remember, there is always a solution for every problem! No matter how hard, it might seem to you at this stage, don’t give up!
